President Niinistö in Brussels: EU to prioritise security

President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz and President Sauli Niinistö in Mäntyniemi in April 2014. President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö visited Brussels on 21–22 January to meet the heads of various EU institutions. On Thursday, 22 January, President Niinistö met Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, and on Wednesday, Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament and Jyrki Katainen, Commission Vice-President.

Statement by the President of the Republic and the Government of Finland regarding the situation in Ukraine

Finland is deeply concerned about the escalation of the conflict in eastern Ukraine and strongly condemns the attacks against the civilian population of the city of Mariupol that killed and injured several people on 24 January 2015. Finland calls upon the parties of the conflict to immediately de-escalate the situation and to observe the Minsk ceasefire agreement. Russia must, according to its international commitments, use its influence on separatists in eastern Ukraine to stop military action.
